Yard Measuring Guide

Measure your yard, estimate landscape material and plan a smoother delivery with Blue Rock Materials in Moreno Valley and Wildomar.

Start with accurate yard measurements

A good material estimate begins with the size and shape of your project area. Use this guide to measure a front yard, side yard, planter bed, pathway or rock border, then use the Blue Rock satellite measuring tool to trace the area from a satellite view.

1

Choose the exact area

Decide which beds, paths or yard sections will receive material. Measure only the space you plan to cover.

2

Measure and select a depth

Record square footage and choose a realistic installation depth for gravel, DG, mulch or river rock.

3

Confirm before delivery

Send Blue Rock the material, measurements, delivery address and access details so the final quantity can be reviewed.

Before you begin

What to have ready

  • The project address
  • A tape measure or measuring wheel
  • Photos of the area and dump location
  • Notes about gates, slopes, wires and tight access
  • The material or color you are considering
  • The desired material depth
  • Areas to subtract, such as concrete or large planters
  • Your preferred delivery timing

Measuring formulas

Calculate square footage by shape

Measure in feet. Break irregular spaces into simple shapes, calculate each piece, then add the totals together.

Rectangle or square

Length × width = square feet

Example: 24 ft × 18 ft = 432 sq. ft.

Triangle

Length × width ÷ 2

Useful for angled corners and tapered planting beds.

Circle

Radius × radius × 3.14

The radius is the distance from the center to the outside edge.

Irregular yard tip: Divide curves and unusual areas into smaller rectangles or triangles. Add their square footage, then subtract patios, walkways, buildings and any area that will remain uncovered.

Depth recommendations

Choose depth before estimating material

Decorative gravel

Start around 2 inches

A common planning depth for broad ground cover. Uneven soil or larger stone can require more.

Decomposed granite paths

Plan around 2–3 inches

Allow for compaction and make sure the base is properly prepared.

River rock and cobble

Often 3–4 inches

Larger rounded stone and dry creek beds usually need greater depth. Call for help before ordering.

Mulch and bark

Start around 2–3 inches

Measure planting beds only and subtract large plants, trunks and hardscape.

Gravel at 2 inches

Square feet ÷ 162 ≈ cubic yards

Use as a preliminary estimate for smaller decorative rock.

Gravel at 3 inches

Square feet ÷ 108 ≈ cubic yards

Final coverage varies with rock size, compaction and site conditions.

Important: Satellite measurements and formulas are planning tools, not guaranteed final quantities. Slope, settling, compaction, moisture, existing base and natural material size can change coverage. Confirm your project with Blue Rock Materials before ordering.

Tips and common mistakes

Get a more useful estimate

Do this

  • Measure twice and write every dimension down
  • Use the same unit for every measurement
  • Account for curves, slopes and low spots
  • Photograph the project and truck access
  • Keep a small project allowance in mind

Avoid this

  • Do not estimate the entire lot if only one bed is changing
  • Do not forget to subtract concrete and structures
  • Do not assume all rock sizes cover at the same rate
  • Do not rely on satellite imagery for exact boundaries
  • Do not schedule delivery before confirming the dump location

Yard measuring FAQ

Questions homeowners often ask

Is satellite yard measurement exact?

No. It provides a convenient planning estimate from satellite imagery. For exact measurements, use a tape measure or measuring wheel, hire a professional, or send Blue Rock your measurements for review.

How do I measure a curved or irregular yard?

Break the space into smaller rectangles, triangles or circles. Calculate each piece and add the results. Include a reasonable allowance for curves, uneven ground and installation conditions.

How much extra material should I order?

The right allowance depends on the material, area shape, slope, compaction and base preparation. Share measurements and photos with Blue Rock instead of applying one percentage to every project.

What information should I send for a quote?

Include the material name, square footage, desired depth, delivery address, preferred timing, dump location and photos of gates, overhead wires, slopes or tight truck access.

Can I use the satellite measuring tool for large river rock or boulders?

Use it to understand the project area, but coverage formulas for small gravel do not apply to large river rock, cobble or boulders. Call Blue Rock Materials for help with those products.
